Champagne’s history is one like many. A long journey to perfection with trial and error and perseverance to create something of delight.
Champagne first originated around the 5th century, give or take, when the Romans first planted vineyards in the Champagne region of France. With its desired climate, the Champagne region provides the perfect growing conditions for the grapes utilized for champagne.
While champagne started its illustrious journey early on, it took until the 9th century for it to make waves, thanks to the Reims cathedral where many kings were crowned, and the 13th century for the trade to pick up in other european regions and countries where champagne truly became a wine of magnitude.
We all have heard of Dom Perignon’s contribution to the history and craft of champagne. From utilizing glass bottles, cork stoppers, and the champagne press which led to the clarity we see in champagne today, but the history of champagne doesn’t stop there.
With contributors such as Jean-Rémy Moët and Madame Clicquot-Ponsardin known as Veuve Clicquot, the production, growth and marketing of champagne moving forward would take us to where we are today.
Champagne is a luxurious drink with a pretty price tag. The expense of champagne is due to its lengthy process and production that is necessary for pure quality that outshines less known competitors. This process took until the 19th century to perfect and is a process that is a code of conduct in this industry referred to as méthode champenoise.
Today, there are protocols in place that require champagne brands to abide by in order to protect the name and production. If a sparkling wine does not have an origin in the Champagne region, it can not be titled “champagne”. This falls under the EU’s “protected designation of origin”.
Oftentimes we think of weddings or engagement parties when it comes to champagne. We sometimes even think of brunch and mixing bubbly with juice (something we don’t advise with our own champagne line) but champagne is more than a “special occasions” drink.
We are a brand dedicated to loving ourselves each and every day and that comes with treating ourselves to the finer things in life, even if that means a glass of champagne while we read or bathe or binge on Netflix.
Point being, the only occasion champagne is perfect for is any occasion you want.
